A Vortex of Emotion

Friday, March 29

Now that Easter is with us why not take a leaf out of Sheryl Crow's (no not not Russell Crowe, Sheryl!!) new single Soak Up the Sun which is about the overload of information thrust upon us daily, and enjoy the blissfully beautiful weather. Sit back and indulge yourself with a cool drink - you've probably earned it. However, if your tastes lean away from the beer variety of becks why not have a look at some of the entries for the Becks Futures 2002 show opening at London's Institute of Contemporary Art today, there is lots for debate there. But me, I'm weary of work, routine and the "8" domineering tyrant side of my nature (see below) so I'm off to loose myself in my highs and lows of intense experiences and chill away from pc's, phones and people for a while (definitely a 5 feeling) and will try to allow my inner artist a chance to surface again in my own distinct culture!!!! (that's the 4 part) Don't stop visiting whilst I'm away and remember if you find any good links you think should be on this page or just want to make nice comments, then let me know. Don't forget to check out the Daily Motivator link today. Happy Easter everyone.

If you don't like blogger why not try diaryland which I surfed into but hei........who stole my colour scheme?

Tried this personality test and surprise surprise, I dont fit into any one category!!! Highest score would suggest I am a 4 but this is separated by a mere point from a 5 and a further point from an 8...mmmm wonder what that says about my state of mind at the moment. A true vortex of emotion! It is interesting though, my scores seemed to be split into three groups; the top three, a middle group of 1, 3, 6 and 2 and a lower group of 9 and 7

The best thing that happened to me today was watching a small flock of beautiful bohemian waxwings feeding off berries in a tree, in the middle of a built up area in the city. The worst thing was forgetting to eat properly myself, with dire consequences! For more info on birds try this birdwatch site

I'm really not sure what the rest of you can see but it looks to me as if there are still problems with the comments - not appearing on my pc so not sure if anyone is out there or not. If you want to leave a comment, please email me at redwriter@redwriting.net.

Today in 1871 Scotland hosted and won the world's first rugby international, defeating England - by one goal and one try to one goal - at Raeburn Place in Edinburgh. (Now, there's a result you don't see too much of :-) )

If you are thinking of changing your life, or have already, this is a good site to look at.....turning point. My change has already seen the hair-cut and now its time to tone the body. I like Callanetics best and I think I've found someone who can do one-to-one classes.....will keep you posted. Now all I need to work on is peace of mind (mmmm that reminds me of some static links I seem to have lost - Daily Motivator? But I like the caption on this peace of mind site "Check back often! We are in a constant state of improvement, expansion, and awakening"....just what I need.

But if all else fails, sit back relax and have a positive pause.

After many hours lying awake trying to remember if I had a back up blog at work or not, it looks as if the blog has been sorted. Much swearing could be heard and not all of it in English. Then when I tried to post, blogger crashed.!!! Anyway, it seems that most of the info is there (mainly due to an uncharacteristic bout of organisation on the 18th March when I apparently did take a back-up!) Hope you have been bearing with me and I promise to make some interesting postings shortly. PS the loss of template was caused by allowing YACC comments to automatically sort the pages - they didnt say they would overwrite the whole template and it was all totally lost. So thank you YACC's for a sleepless night.....not!

Art or just plain sick? Tell me your view?

In need of motivation - make a point of checking the daily motivator each morning. If you are in the mood to believe it that is!!!! There is a static link on the left to make sure you check it regularly. As Ralph says today "Leave your complaints and disappointments behind as you move onward and upward toward the best you can possibly imagine"..............won't somebody shtop me

Today, there are so many things that we can do, learn and enjoy. Choices seem overwhelming. There is always something new. If we try to do too many things, for example, learn to play music, develop computer skill, work, look after the family, cook, etc., our time and energy are spread thinly across these activities. Quality of time and effort will naturally be compromised and results may be mediocre

Dedicated to bad drivers everywhere - try this test. And to the very nice gentleman who I almost managed to have a conversation with, nose to nose....... I hope the next time you pull out its in front of a 10 ton truck with the braking power of of an ocean liner.

This one is for bird-lovers everywhere. See if you can find the hidden bird

Today in 1689 the Earl of Leven was commissioned to raise regiment of 800 in Border country to hold Edinburgh against the Jacobites. The regiment became The King's Own Scottish Borderers.

Found this wonderful site on Hawian art which I thought went with the ambience of the blog. It is meant to be a roll-over image so that you can see two paintings but I don't think I got the coding right so perhaps you'll only see one and will have to go the the website to admire the rest.

Dog With A Bone

Sorry there have been no postings for a few days. Normal service will be resumed, thanks to my wonderful vigilant eye and never-ending quest to get to the bottom of things I don't understand. Like a dog with a bone........gggggrrrrrrrrr. Always knew I had strong teeth for something. However, there still seems to be something wrong with the coding. If you look at the bottom bar on your browser "Red Writing" still has some code after it but I WILL sort that too. Probably just another missing ">" Talk about searching for a needle in a haystack!

If you've been to this page before you might notice that I've given it a slight revamp. Hope you all like the colour scheme. I am having a few problems with browsers - Netscape doesnt seem to recognise most of the links so if you are using Netscape you might be missing out on lots of exciting things!! I've also tried to add a few extra links but for somereason they dont seem to save - not sure what the problem is but I'll try to get it sorted soon. Please let me know what you think of the new scheme.

Citizens in this country who do not excercise their right to vote should hang their heads in shame. Imagine living in Zimbabwe at the moment? Late notification of where polling stations are, not enough stations - especially in the capital, Harare where much of the opposition to Mugabe is centred. BBC journalists have been banned from reporting on the situation and it is rumoured that the President is trying to implement a law to ban criticism of him! 18th Century politics still alive in the 21st Century - shameful

Hamish Henderson (1919 - 2002)

Hert's luve ye cannae preeson in Quo life, the world is mine. ('Flyting o' Life and Daith')

Poet and songwriter Hamish Henderson was born in Blairgowrie, Perthshire. During the Second World War he served in North Africa. Elegies for the Dead in Cyrenaica (1948) chronicles that experience - the drama and horror of battle set against the tedium of military routine - and explores the moral implications of war. Hamish Henderson has written many great folk songs, such as 'Ye Banks of Sicily 'and 'Freedom Come All Ye'.

Sadly, Hamish died on Friday 8th March 2002 in Edinburgh. He will be greatly missed by many Scots, writers and musicians all over the world. Hamish was considered to be one of the main revivalists of the Folk Scene in Scotland and was a frequent visitor to Sandy Bells in Edinburgh.

A dedicated folklorist, his passion for his subject and extraordinary breadth of knowledge illuminated his lectures at Edinburgh University's School of Scottish Studies. For many years he travelled around Scotland collecting traditional songs and tales. When he met Jeannie Robertson in Aberdeen in 1953 she was a little-known singer; Hamish Henderson was instrumental in introducing her remarkable voice and rich store of traditional song to a far wider public. His recent publications include Alias MacAlias: Writings on Song, Folk and Literature (1992), The Armstrong Nose: Selected Letters (1996) and Collected Poems and Songs (2000).

Found this really silly link for drivers and an even sillier one for squirrel fishing. Don't look at the latter if you are easily offended. But for those of you who have experienced squirrels (or rats with pr) in the attic....

Today is a day for the birth of exotically-named artistic geniuses. In 1475 Michelangelo de Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni was born; in 1619 Savinien Cyrano de Bergerac was born; in 1806, Elizabeth Barrett Browning; in 1844, Nicolai Rimski-Korsakov; in 1928, Gabriel Garcia Marquez; in 1944, Dame Kiri Te Kanawa and in 1924 Sir Eduardo Paolozzi was born. Wish I could add my own to that list.......soon

Reading this and praying for my brother-in-law's safe return

Who or what do you put your faith in? What happens when events make you question your beliefs? Why do most people have a need to believe in something or someone omnipotent? Does everyone feel the same way? If you ever loose faith in yourself, what then?

Interesting political link to elections around the world. The elections in the Ukraine may be a source for news in the next few days so watch this space.

To die in the name of food seems very extreme, but thats what poor Kokos tis Kakas did trying to deliver the "first ever batch of halloumi to reach the United States". I was looking for halloumi because it was mentioned in a recipie my other half decided had to be made for friends coming over for lunch. Most people would choose a safe, tried and tested recipie to entertain but that never happens in our house, so my part in the preparation was to find out exactly what halloumi was. It was quite fun really. I hadn't realised what I had been missing out on. Lots of web sites had recipies and of course I drifted from there into thoughts of sun, sand, sea and summer holidays in Cyprus.
I haven't been there yet but perhaps this will be the year. Meanwhile, back to the lunch preparations, house tidying, shopping, commis chef duties. Perhaps I understand how poor Kokos tis Kakas felt.

When I first started this blog I had intended it to contain more art sites and I have been slightly
remiss in providing readers with art links. Thanks to Pacarras for this article. As a frustrated artist I may get brave enough to attempt a submission to wetcanvas. There is a brilliant interactive web site on Jheronimous Bosch which I found fascinating on several levels. It is definitely worth looking at and I love the site design.

The Turner collection is now online. When I tried the link the Tate Gallery site was not available but hopefully you should be able to access it with perserverence and I can only assume that the volume of traffic has caused an overload.

Every year I try to make an annual visit to the National Gallery of Scotland to see the The Vaughan Bequest of Turner Watercolours This exhibition is only held for the month of January, traditionally to protect the delicate colours of the paintings. If you have never been it is worth a visit. But in memory of Kokos tis Kakas I've posted an image of Turner's "Rain, steam and speed".
