What kind of Christmas shopper are you? Apparently this is me: 'After cutting up your Visa card in 1993, you have given nothing but hugs and homemade cakes to your friends and relations, no matter the occasion. Ecologically sound, but socially awkward.' I have started thinking about Christmas and I have started to think about all the things it involves, so I am putting it away again for a few weeks, or at least until I get the Christmas cake made. I wonder if I can do that before they demolish my kitchen? Wednesday, November 27

Had a lovely weekend catching up with an old school friend in Aberdeen. Amongst other things, the cultured bit was a visit to Aberdeen Art Gallery, where there was an exhibition of the 2002 BP Portrait Award entrants. It was a really good exhibition. I did hope to post a few pictures of Merlin the bionic cat, but unfortunately my camera skills let me down - either that or Merlin didn't keep still long enough! Will post a story about this fortunate/unfortunate cat soon. Wednesday, November 20
My sympathy goes out to David McRae, the artist who has contracted what is suspected to be rabies. I was going to write many more things this morning but somehow none of it seems important any longer. Here is another link to some of David's work. Tuesday, November 19
Very childish but a great diversion for coffee break time. Try the slogan link. The first one I put in said "The right one the bright one, that's Red Writer" but not sure that will be there if you click the link. Monday, November 18
I wonder what William Caxton would have thought about weblogs? Today in 1477, he issued the first, dated, printed book from his printing press in Westminster. We have so much to thank him for and it is a reminder that, for all the wonderful information available through the web, there is still nothing which quite compares to a good book. There is something reassuring to know that The Royal Mail dropped the Consignia name. It's like admitting you were wrong big time. I want to be here today - Scotland meets the Sahara Wednesday, November 13

An interesting article on love, marriage and sex .... and a few interesting facts and figures at the end... Thank goodness some things have changed: Today in 1869, Edinburgh University admitted women to the study of medicine, the first in Britain. Sophia Jex-Blake was the first to qualify, although not allowed to graduate. Monday, November 11
Lest we forget......... Bent double, like old beggars under sacks, Knock-kneed, coughing like hags, we cursed through sludge, Till on the haunting flares we turned our backs And towards our distant rest began to trudge. Men marched asleep. Many had lost their boots But limped on, blood-shod. All went lame; all blind; Drunk with fatigue; deaf even to the hoots Of tired, outstripped Five-Nines that dropped behind. more Rather poignant I thought, as the government prepare for military action against Iraq. Feeling directionless today, I decided to consult all other worldly influences such as horoscopes, biorhythms and numerology. Didn't help much but was mildly amusing. Friday, November 8
I love art. I like most things. Some contemporary art I do have problems with - Turner Prize stuff. Not because it makes you think. I like art which makes you think. Stuff which is a challenge. But this, I am afraid to say made me feel instantly sick. I am alarmed at my own prudishness but I think a dirty protests would be easier to look at! Perhaps it is the mood I am in, but I found this sticky report really funny, in a reassuring sort of way. It's nice to know that all the little annoying things in life are taken care of in an effort to make things look nice. It appealed to the aesthetic me, whilst somewhere at the back of my mind I was thinking, what a complete waste of tax-payers' money. I wonder if there is a bigger, council version, of those little catalogues which show you all the gadgets you realised you just can't live without. Found this really good site for kids. Perhaps it is good for adults too. Thursday, November 7

Comments on what this is all about would be welcome. I can't quite work out what to make of it. Is it a big computer hoax, monitoring trick, or worse still a virus? Is it a trailer for a film as has also been suggested? Whatever you think, let me know. The only thing I can honestly say is that I really don't believe it............but we'll see. Fate - in the form of "an illegal action" on my pc - has stepped in and saved you all from having to read a lengthy philosophical posting which I had been compiling in my head all day yesterday and today and finally committed to keyboard this morning. It was a happy posting filled with music, thoughts, both past and future, the satisfaction of domesticity and congratulations to the East Neuk village, voted the best place to live in Scotland. Still, I expect fate knew best. |
