01/31/2006: "Grey Wagtail"
Today I saw a grey wagtail bobbing about on a roof (a flat roof with a huge puddle!) outside the window. Think i'll have to keep a tick list. One bird I don't want to see though is the aggressive houdini bird.

The grey wag has become a daily visitor - it's really nice to see. Like Butuki, I think of it as a spirit keeping an eye on me.

I love birds, I used to have a feeder but they outlawed them in my city because they attract BEARS!

I'd love to see parrots flying free - as long as they don't kill off some of the smaller ones here. Also saw a pied wag this morning.

The same birds have established themselves here in Tokyo since about thirty years ago. There are steady flocks of them throughout the city, but they have never gone so far as to push out the local birds... if anything it is the local Jungle and Carrion Crows that are pushing out everything else (the Jungle Crows are huge!). Maybe the British ornithologists could take a look at Japanese Ring-necked Parakeet studies and compare notes. Might help.
I don't kinow if you've ever seen a parrot flying free; it is an amazing and beautiful sight. Even if you don't like this non-native species taking over your local habitat, I would recommend seeing one just to know that these birds never belonged in captivity. They are acrobatic and exquisite fliers.
Think of it this way... just another legacy of the British Empire making its claim to the right of immigration.
I also love wagtails, especially the yellow wagtail. But it is the white wagtail that has a special place... wherever I go in the world during my travels a white wagtail is always there on the road to make those short, excited flights ahead of me. They are my guard spirits.
