02/04/2006: "Busy"

First week over in the new job and it's been good. I know I seem a bit obsessed with it all at the moment but it's still new and exciting and a bit all-consuming. I've made a few observations on my first week:..

Most employees are female! shocked
Most employees wear black
Most employees wear jackets
So it follows that most employees wear black jackets - which rarely get removed and definitely not in meetings
I hate this formality and intend to start a one woman campaign to alter all this. I think it's why they employeed me hehe
Everyone seems very friendly
My office is small - but I do have one (at the moment)
My office has a pipe running through it which trickles water all day long
I walk a lot
The grey wag visits every day
The building smells funny
The building has a very confusing layout - but I'm getting used to it
The commute to and from work isn't as bad as I thought
I need to change my cd's in the car more often
I don't get time to check my emails
I have a thin client terminal not a regular pc
I can't download anything
I can't sync my palm handheld
MSN is not allowed
I've had ear-ache since Monday
I didn't notice I worked five days instead of four
Time goes very quickly
I have to try to meet at least another 45 people

So, I've been having fun, observing, listening, contributing, thinking. It felt slightly less strange on Friday compared to Monday. SO took me out for a meal on Friday night and after several glasses of wine I got home, collapsed into bed early and slept until 8am this morning.

This weekend is quite busy, I have lots of art to catch up with but we're out for dinner tonight and I've been into town with SYD this morning so I'm already pretty tired. Tomorrow there's rugby so I won't get time to do much then either.

Busy, busy, busy..yawwwwwwwwwn

The boss is cool and the classes are for a BA Combined Studies art degree - but the timescale is fairly open ended (9yrs). I'm going to keep up the practical ones and any mandatory theory ones will be done when I feel I can take on more cerebral things! hehe

I hope you have a great boss too. That factor makes a huge difference! smile

Are your Art classes for some kind of degree, or are you just learning skills and such for fun?

Thanks Elise. I am really worried about my art. I've had to drop a module or two (theory ones) already to fit in the classes and even SO has said i'm not doing enough work!!! I think I'll just have to take it easy for a bit and see how things go. I still love the practical classes but don't get a lot of time to do much research or develop ideas. I finished the large jewellery piece I was working on and trying to work on something new and finish it in about five weeks is going to be really difficult and won't allow me to experiment as much as I'd like to. I do start a drawing module after Easter which I'm looking forward to as I really haven't done anything much since the summer. Right and left side of the brain are battling for my attentions but I'll play the moderator and make sure everthing gets a chance. For now I have to concentrate a little more on the wowing the new people because unfortunately that's the bit that allows me to pay for the art. Once I settle in I'll be able to give more time to my art again, but I'm under no illusion about the next couple of years - they are going to be tough...but I think secretly, I quite like tough razz
