04/07/2006: "Bird Flu"

When I wrote that I was in Fife a week past Sunday, I never thought that one of the harbours we went to would hit world headlines as the first place in the UK to discover bird flu!...

Yes, when I was driving around down memory lane, the poor (now dead) swan was probably floating past me in the sea feeling very ill. It's a very strange thought. Cellardyke is now on the map. I lived the first 18 years of my life within what is now a six mile protection zone. I really hope this is a one off and not going to affect the whole bird population over here. There are so many different kinds of birds around the coasts and breeding colonies and nature reserves are all within a few miles. If this does take off, the bird population could be decimated. And although the risk to humans is being reported as minimal unless you work closely with poultry, do we really know? Can I be 100% certain that the chest infection I can feel coming on is absolutely nothing to do with it (yes, probably psychosomatic but I do feel dreadful- just in time for my holiday) sad

But hey, I'm on holiday. The feeling is marred slightly by feeling a bit crook but I have survived the first ten weeks in my new job and believe me this holiday can't come soon enough. In my first ten weeks, I have attended 99 meetings. Made 56 personal folders in my outlook mail (which means 56 different topics I need to know things about and retain knowledge on). It's a crazy existance. I want to relax but all I can think about is how hectic things are going to be when I get back next Monday because I then have to dash off to a training course for a few days.

But I have to try to switch off so I'm going to start packing and see if that makes me feel more holiday'ish. Well either that or the wine and chocolate I intend to drink/eat at the same time. Mmmm, maybe I'll be the one on the Island with ironed on chocolate stains on my clothes.

Have a wonderful holiday, we're probably getting bird flu next here in Alaska! I saw a flock of wild peacocks on the side of the road this morning and I felt very sad, thinking of all the birds that have died (we have swans here too)...but try to focus on the positive and store up lots of beautiful images.
