Artistic assistance

This is good news for budding artists - and Wilhelmina Barns-Graham was a fellow Fifer. I'm off to find out how to apply for that fund, it might be the answer to my prayers. And although, ashamedly I have to confess I hadn't heard of her before, I think I've just found the statement print for my kitchen....on the other hand, maybe this one. I'm now a convert to her work :-)

Own Room

I just moved into my own office at work. It's nice. I like it. It will be great to help the concentration. I've been sorting things out all afternoon and totally lost track of the time....and now that I look, yeah gods it's way past leaving time! - oh how time flies when you are enjoying yourself. Tomorrow I must remember a kettle.

History & Smoking

A little bit of history to start the day. Did you know that...
"The Stone of Destiny, also known as the Stone of Scone, was returned to Scotland from the Palace of Westminster in London on this day in 1996. The stone, a symbol of Scotland, was used in the coronation ceremonies of Scottish kings for more than four hundred years until stolen by Edward I of England in the 13th century. After Scottish nationalists re-stole the stone in 1950 there has been some doubt about the authenticity of the stone that now sits in Edinburgh castle."

And only a very few select people really know the truth. Still talking of Scotland...

Same Old

Some things are destined to be the same and some things are destined to change. Did someone say that? Where I fit in, in this stupid crazy mixed up world is anyone's guess. Perhaps I'm not meant to. I am full of profound thoughts tonight but nothing makes sense and the words won't flow properly.

Munros

Looks like the plan to climb the Ben this year is going rapidly out the window. So I'll have to content myself with buying a map of all the munros.

Really pleased the plans for the Portrait Gallery are in the offing too. It's such a beautiful building.

My Big Skinny Scottish Family

Yesterday we took a trip to my brother's to help him celebrate a fairly significant birthday. It was lovely. I like it when all the family get together. The banter is always good. Sister-in-Law (hereafter named SIL as as she's the only SIL I have) had put on a great spread of food and nibbles. Normally late sister and two of her family excelled themselves by being almost 3 hours late (the hold up on the bridge excuse didn't work because we came that way too and it wasn't so bad ;-)).

Extreme Writing

Now this is what I call extreme writing. I hope Jamie Andrew does get the Boardman Tasker Prize for mountain literature. It's a tough way to become a famous writer.

Bank Fraud

So bank fraud isn't something the banks do much about and so far some little is having a fantastic time on our cards. Now, excuse me for being very stupid here but if I can trail where they are spending and I am sure all the shops they've been into have cctv, why can't the bank ask for the tapes, work out the timings and catch them. Despite being told we had to report the situation to the police and despite standing in a reception area of a draughty police station waiting for almost an hour after work we are told it's the bank who have to report the crime not us.

Furious Like you have never seen before

To the person/s in Cambridge, who is/are running up over £2000 on our joint credit card on their happy little shopping spree. Stop it! It's my money not yours and you are causing me a great deal of stress and annoyance.

Walking and Remembering

Someone asked me on Tuesday if I'd had a nice weekend last weekend. To be honest, I couldn't remember what I did. It took me until the evening to remember! And no, I didn't blast the weekend away in a drunken haze but I am getting seriously worried about my short-term memory. When recall started to work I remembered that I had started a new painting on Saturday and been for a lovely walk on the Sunday, out in the countryside, in the sunshine, eating fresh brambles that were delicious. How could I have forgotten that?

Nothing to write

The creative brain is decidedly lacking for the time being. Exsisting on 11 hour working days, lack of fresh air and lack of proper sleep reminds me to look forward to the good things. Can't wait for September to be over and October to start.

Passing on the wisdom

I watched a documentary on Mexican free-tailed bats the other night. It was fascinating. When looking for more information on them I came across this story.

Painting

I have two ideas for paintings in my head at the moment. One from a holiday photo and the other from a strong image with a strange sort of message, in a dream a few weeks ago. I might write more about the dream when I've throught it through a bit more, as my simple interpretation is that it's something my sub-conscious is wrestling with and causing me a fair bit of anxiety at the moment. Anyway, it's good to feel the creativity and I hope I can get things to work out as I visualise them in my head.

Cynical

Perhaps I am too cynical but the "working at home" euphemism is really getting to me. Coincidence then that it's a rainy, misty, cold, Monday morning?

Fireworks

The Fireworks were very impressive. Timing was better than I've seen before and the music was great. But lying there in the gardens on my back, glass of wine in hand, staring up at the wonderful spectacle, dampened only by the misty Edinburgh air, I couldn't help wondering why we associate fireworks with good things and happiness and why they are traditionally used as a celebration of events, when in reality they are using the same destructive gunpowder etc that goes into making weapons. How can something so beautiful also be capable of causing so much devastation? We really do live in a fd up world.

Beslan

Thoughts are with the families who mourn the after effects in Beslan. I can't help the disbelief I feel at the way the seige was handled. For all the criticism we in the West lay on the over zealousness of our own security forces, there is no doubt that this would have been handled very differently here. Have your own say - Should Putin share responsibility for the tragedy in Beslan? (Scroll to bottom of the page).

Horoscope

Sometimes horoscopes just seem to fit.
"Life is pretty unpredictable right now. Your best plans don’t seem to be working out as expected, and others are not being as supportive as they used to be. You must follow your instincts and totally rely on yourself for the time being. Your destiny is about to change direction."

Happy

Wish I had something happy to post. Must be the mood I am in. I've just spent four hours coding in holiday photos only to discover it doesn't work. I've just wasted another four hours of my life. But it could be worse, at least I have a life. In Russia the consequence of the militant action is too horrendous to contemplate.

Friends - or not...

I got one of those txt friendship star things sent to me the other day. I hadn't seen them before. You forward it to your friends and they send it back to you and on to other friends. I sent it on to lots of people...... I didn't get any back.

Vettriano

I'm glad to hear that Vettriano is back in favour. I love Thoughts of you.

It's SYD's birthday today, so we've done the morning present thing but it's a school morning so not much time to celebrate. Although my memory is getting increasingly bad as things try to crowd it out I can at least remember where I was fourteen years ago today.
